Wedding Day Timeline — A Sample Schedule Hour by Hour

By Gilded Invite Team · October 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: a typical wedding day lasts 8 to 10 hours. Allow about 3 hours to get ready, 30 minutes for the ceremony, 60–90 minutes for cocktails and photos, 2 hours for dinner and speeches, then 3–4 hours of dancing. Below is a sample schedule for a 2 pm ceremony you can adapt to your own day.

Sample Wedding Day Timeline (2 pm Ceremony)

  • 9:00 — Hair and makeup begin (allow 45–60 minutes per person).
  • 11:30 — Photographer arrives for details: dress, rings, invitation.
  • 12:30 — Light lunch for the wedding party. Do not skip it.
  • 13:00 — Get dressed; optional first look or family photos.
  • 13:30 — Guests arrive and are seated.
  • 14:00 — Ceremony (20–30 minutes civil, 45–60 religious).
  • 14:30 — Confetti exit, congratulations and group photo.
  • 14:45 — Cocktail hour with drinks and canapés; couple portraits.
  • 16:15 — Guests called to dinner; couple's grand entrance.
  • 16:30 — Wedding breakfast or dinner served.
  • 18:15 — Speeches and toasts (keep each under 5 minutes).
  • 19:00 — Cake cutting.
  • 19:15 — First dance, then the dance floor opens.
  • 21:00 — Evening guests arrive; late-night snacks served.
  • 23:30 — Last dance and send-off.

How Long Each Part of the Day Takes

Getting Ready: 3–4 Hours

Count everyone who needs hair and makeup and multiply by 45–60 minutes. Schedule the bride last so her look is freshest, and finish 30 minutes early as a buffer.

Ceremony: 20–60 Minutes

Put a time 30 minutes earlier than the real start on your invitation details so guests arrive relaxed. Check whether your venue or officiant has fixed time slots.

Cocktail Hour and Photos: 60–90 Minutes

This is where most timelines slip. Give your photographer a written list of family groupings and name one organised relative to gather people quickly.

Dinner and Speeches: 2–2.5 Hours

Three courses take roughly 90 minutes. Speeches can go before dinner (calmer speakers) or after (guests relaxed and fed) — just tell your caterer which.

Party: 3–4 Hours

The first dance opens the evening. Plan late-night food around 21:00–22:00 and confirm the venue's finish time and music curfew.

Build 15 minutes of buffer between every major moment — it is the secret to a calm day.

Adjusting the Timeline

  • Summer weddings: plan couple portraits for golden hour, about an hour before sunset.
  • Winter weddings: move the ceremony earlier to use daylight for photos.
  • Destination weddings: allow extra travel time between ceremony and reception venues.
  • Religious ceremonies: add 30–45 minutes and check rules on photography.

Share the Timeline With Your Guests

Guests do not need every detail, but they do need arrival time, ceremony time, reception location and when the evening ends. A digital invitation shows the full schedule, directions and RSVP in one link — and if a time changes, you update it once instead of reprinting cards.
